Description
Boeddha shakti
At first glance, an erotic spectacle. Yet it can be interpreted in many ways. It is this image that has caused a great deal of commotion in Vietnam: imagine Buddha with a naked woman on his lap. In this perspective she is seen as heretic, seducer, a symbol of earthly lust.
In this classic image you see a scene in which Buddha has the goddess Shakti on his lap. It’s a scene from the Tantric Buddhism. However, the goddess Shakti is a figure from Hinduism. She is the consort of the god Shiva and represents the earth's universal energy, fertility and the female urge to create. Buddha in this setting is also called the Pleasure Buddha. In Tantric Buddhism, the embrace symbolizes the perfect meeting between body and soul. This meeting is therefore also called Nirvana: the ultimate liberation.
